BB10 has 14,000 apps by Indian developers: BlackBerry
Published in Mobile technologies Written by Mohammad GalalApps have become one of the key aspects of a mobile platform. Apple and Google collectively generated $2.2 billion in the first three months of this year from apps alone. Though far behind, Blackberry is leaving no stone unturned to catch up with its new BlackBerry 10 apps. At the recently conducted BlackBerry Enterprise Mobility Management Forum in Mumbai, we spoke to Annie Mathew, Director, Business Development and Alliance, BlackBerry India, to know what’s brewing in the BlackBerry App World. As promised, 70,000 apps were made available for BB10 devices during the launch of the platform. This number has now increased with over 100,000 apps being made available for BB10 devices, says Mathew. Talking about significant app development in India, she points out that of the total number of apps, around 14,000 are from Indian vendors. It has 40,000 registered developers, but that’s just a subset of the total number of developers as everyone doesn't register.

Talking about BB10’s multimedia experience, and BlackBerry’s big revenue plans from mobile gaming, Annie tells us, “The BB10 is an awesome for platform for gamers. A lot of gamers have been loving the platform. In fact, in the early days we had shared the beta version of the platform with game developers and gamers. While earlier they would have spent two-three months on a BlackBerry device, it is now become easier and they have responded within two to three weeks. Developing games has become easier with cascade and support for C and C++. Moreover, they are also making money. Games remain the biggest category along with utility and productivity apps, and the largest pie out of the paid applications.” However, she further tells us that games form the bigger segment of the revenue, but more so for developers. The revenue share is 30 percent for BlackBerry and 70 percent for developers.
Make and receive phone calls with updated version of AirDroid
Published in Mobile technologies Written by Mohammad GalalAndroid app AirDroid has been updated to version 2.0. The biggest change in the update is that it now gives access to your phone with a cellular data connection, as opposed to Wi-Fi being the only option in the earlier versions. The major advantage for this is that you don’t need the phone to be connected to the same network as the computer to use AirDroid. This can be done by simply scanning a QR code, or making an AirDroid account and using that to log into your phone. You can grab the update from Google Play.
Other added functionality includes a "Find my Phone" feature that lets you track your phone in case it gets lost or stolen, a remote wipe option in case your phone gets into the wrong hands, and a camera option that lets you access your phone's front or rear camera, take pictures, and store them directly on your computer without directly activating the display. There are also incoming call notifications as well as the ability to start outgoing calls. Along with all of this, there have been improvements and bug fixes to improve the stability of the app.
AirDroid gives you the ability to control your phone from a computer. It also lets you access all the files on your phone, including APKs, music, photos and videos, among others. The handset is controlled through a web app on a browser, which has an interface very similar to that of Android. You can do various things like view or download videos, use your contact lists, or even send and receive messages.
Samsung shows off tablets controlled by the brain
Published in Mobile technologies Written by Mohammad Galal
Samsung may be better known these days for its TVs and smartphones, but the company is a major R&D player in software and hardware markets. A recent investment of $1.1 billion in Silicon Valley is just one example of the place R&D has within Samsung.
Now, the South Korean electronics giant has shown working proof of a tablet controlled by the user's brain. An MIT Technology Review report says that Samsung’s researchers are working with Roozbeh Jafari, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University of Texas in Dallas, on how users can use their thoughts to launch applications, pick contacts, choose songs in a playlist, adjust volume and power up and power down a tablet or any device, in this case, a Galaxy Note 10.1.

Samsung and the Dallas researchers monitored brain activity patterns that occur when people are shown repetitive visuals. This is how the team got EEG-detected brain signals to control a smartphone. For instance, researchers found that a user could launch any application by concentrating on its distinctive icon and can also make selections within menus as long as there are visual stimuli.
Insoo Kim is one of Samsung’s lead researchers on the programme and he believes it is all about finding new ways to interact with devices. “Several years ago, a small keypad was the only input modality to control the phone, but nowadays the user can use voice, touch, gesture, and eye movement to control and interact with mobile devices. Adding more input modalities will provide us with more convenient and richer ways of interacting with mobile devices,” he said.
The speed with which a user can interact with the device depends on the user, according to Kim. As per their research, on average, users can make one selection every five seconds with accuracy ranging from 80 to 95 percent.
HTC One being sold for Rs 41,000 online
Published in Mobile technologies Written by Mohammad GalalHTC's latest flagship device, named the One, has been spotted on a number of listings online. Shopping website, ShopYourWorld, is selling the handset for Rs 41,000, which is almost Rs 2,000 less than the official cost of the phone. At the time of writing, the phone isn't available for purchase anywhere else, but it is listed on some other websites.
The One will undoubtedly be a popular phone because of its price point. We've been very impressed with the handset, as you can see from our review. It has a good-looking new UI and its hardware can pack quite a punch.
The One has a 4.7-inch full HD SuperLCD3 display that has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This means the screen has a pixel density of 469 ppi, the highest we have come across yet. The phone has a lot of new features, including the BlinkFeed, Zoe, BoomSound, and the new version of Sense UI.

Here are some of the key specifications of the HTC One:
- 4.7-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels
- HSPA+; LTE, Cat3, GPRS/EDGE
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/ac/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot
- GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS
- Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP
- NFC
- HTC UltraPixel camera with autofocus, 2.1-megapixel front camera
- 32 or 64GB internal memory
The HTC One was launched back in February at swanky, simultaneous events in London and New York. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 600 CPU, which has four Krait cores clocked at 1.7GHz each. There is also an Adreno 320 GPU and a healthy 2GB of RAM.
“People today immerse themselves in a constant stream of updates, news and information. Although smartphones are one of the main ways we stay in touch with the people and information we care about, conventional designs have failed to keep pace with how people are actually using them,” said Faisal Siddiqui, Country Head, HTC India, during the launch. “A new, exciting approach to the smartphone is needed and with the new HTC One, we have re-imagined the mobile experience from the ground up to reflect this new reality.”
The HTC BlinkFeed transforms the home screen into a single live stream of information aggregated from various sources. The infomation displayed on the screen includes social updates, entertainment and lifestyle updates, news and photos.
HTC Zoe gives people the ability to shoot high-res photos that come to life in three-second snippets. These photos, called Zoes, are then displayed in a way that brings the gallery to life and transforms the traditional photo gallery of still images into a motion gallery. It also automatically creates integrated highlight films from each event comprised of Zoes, photos and videos set to music with professionally designed cuts, transitions and effects. These highlight videos can be remixed or set to different themes, and can be shared on social networks, email and other services.
HTC BoomSound introduces front-facing stereo speakers with a dedicated amplifier and a full HD display that immerses people in music, videos, games and the YouTube clips they love. BeatsAudio integration is enabled across the entire experience.
Samsung considering Hynix chips for mobile products
Published in Mobile technologies Written by Mohammad GalalSamsung Electronics Co is considering purchasing mobile memory chips from rival SK Hynix Inc for future products including its new flagship Galaxy S smartphone to be launched this month, J.K. Shin, head of Samsung's mobile business, said on Thursday.
A supply deal would be a boost to SK Hynix, which relies heavily on Apple Inc as a customer for its mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips.
It also points to tightening chip supplies as mobile gadget makers prepare to upgrade their flagship product lines with greater variety and increased memory storage capacity.

Prices of mobile DRAM chips have increased steadily since early this year, reflecting a tightening supply outlook.
Samsung, the world's biggest maker of DRAM chips, has largely depended on internal supplies of memory chips for its Galaxy range of smartphones, but the market has expected it may also begin looking to outside chip suppliers to ensure no supply disruptions for key models of its Galaxy S smartphone.
The Galaxy S4, which will go on sale later this month, is expected to outsell its predecessors, with monthly sales of about 10 million, and could leapfrog past Apple's iPhone which recaptured the top spot in global smartphone sales in the fourth quarter, analysts said.
Shares in Hynix dropped 2.8 percent on Thursday as Apple suppliers were hit by concerns of weaker demand from the iPhone and iPad maker, after a disappointing revenue forecast by one of its suppliers.
Shares in LG Display Co, which makes flat screens for Apple's iPhone and iPad, tumbled 4.3 percent.
